Lamp Working

Lampworking is a bit like Glass Blowing, in that it is working with molten glass, but it is on a smaller scale, generally making beads.

We work with glass rods that are heated on an oxygen and propane fueled torch. The rods are melted and the molten glass wrapped around a metal rod called a mandrel. Layers of glass are added to the mandrel and different designs are created with different application techniques. The more layers and designs you add the larger and more complex the bead becomes.

Our lamp working course is aimed at beginners aged 16 and over. We start by making a basic ‘doughnut’ bead before we move onto trying different decoration and shaping techniques. These include but are not limited to, creating dots, stripes and swirls.
